What is H.264?

You may have heard about H.264 from here and there, especially if you ever shopped around for video products like a DVR. There are many products where its name contains H.264, and some might even think that's a name of a product. However, H.264 is a technical standard for today's video compression. You encounter H.264 from all over including Blu-ray Disks, Cable TV, YouTube, Netflix, and moreover, Digital Video Recorder. (surprise!)
To get in more technical terms, H.264, also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding), is a video compression standard that offers significantly greater compression than its predecessors. The standard is expected to offer up to twice the compression of the current MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile), in addition to improvements in perceptual quality. The H.264 standard can provide DVD-quality video at under 1 Mbps, and is considered promising for full-motion video over wireless, satellite, and ADSL Internet connections.
Following is few of many advantages of H.264 video compression.
*2x more efficient than MPEG-4 Part 2 (natural video) encoding:
*3x smaller file size than comparable MPEG-2 encoders:
*Faster download time:
*Substantially higher quality video (SNR)
*No fast motion blurring inherent in MPEG-4 (advanced motion compensation)
What this sums up to you as a DVR consumer is that it means you get clearer images and more recording time for the same amount of storage space!
All of our DVRs are equipped with H.264 codec. Come visit us at our website and check out our surveillance systems.
